Boff Whalley: 'In defence of anarchy'

‘It’s the catch-all term that’s being used to describe this week’s riots. But is this really anarchy? Not even close, says Chumbawumba’s Boff Whalley, a self-professed anarchist’

"I didn’t do any research at all on Smith. I just read him. There’s no research. Just read it. He’s pre-capitalist, a figure of the Enlightenment. What we would call capitalism he despised. People read snippets of Adam Smith, the few phrases they teach in school. Everybody reads the first paragraph of The Wealth of Nations where he talks about how wonderful the division of labor is. But not many people get to the point hundreds of pages later, where he says that division of labor will destroy human beings and turn people into creatures as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human being to be. And therefore in any civilized society the government is going to have to take some measures to prevent division of labor from proceeding to its limits."

Oscar Wilde, novelist, poet and playwright, was so enchanted by the work of Peter Kropotkin that he converted to anarchism and wrote the essay The Soul of Man under Socialism.

He also compared Kropotkin to Jesus, just saying

A Very Short Introduction to Anarchism

ghoulmann:

It’s inexplicable, but this 2004 Colin Ward book is available as free PDF. I’ve finished my print edition and will compose a review at the earliest opportunity.

Also, apparently Ward passed in 2010. I guess I shouldn’t wonder that I wasn’t informed.

"It is said that anarchism is not socialism. This is a mistake. Anarchism is voluntary socialism. There are two kinds of socialism, archistic and anarchistic, authoritarian and libertarian, state and free. Indeed, every proposition for social betterment is either to increase or decrease the powers of external wills and forces over the individual. As they increase they are archistic; as they decrease they are anarchistic."

Anonymous asked: How are you a fan of Anarchism and Socialism, or are they just an interest of yours? And as for your "question" to evil tea bagger, I am not aware of who you hang out with or are surrounded by, but MANY Americans are proud to be an ally of Israel. They are technologically and economically strong, and have a strong military. I am proud to be an Ally of Israel, even if our sad excuse for a president isn't. He no longer has the backing of his country, and does not speak for the whole of us.

wow. my first hate-mail (does this count?). i guess i was asking for it.

i am an anarchist and a member of the socialist party usa (i am also a former scottish green party member and am helping the green party of illinois in the upcoming elections). i do not believe in capitalism or state-capitalism or whatever you want to call the system within which we all operate. i believe in the free-association of individuals, worker-controlled production, equal rights, equal access to services and resources, pacifism (the abolishment of the military and other forms of aggression) and a lot of other things i don’t feel the need to mention here but will be happy to discuss should you wish to pursue further dialogue.

as for my question[s] to evil teabagger (nice use of quotation marks…) i’m not sure what there is to be proud about regarding the us support of israel. i am proud to be an ally of the israeli people (my wife is jewish and has many relatives in israel), not the israeli state. crimes against humanity are no source of pride for any decent human being. decent israelis do not support military action against palestinians. i support local efforts. the us has no business in the middle east. if you can argue otherwise - if you can argue an honest, respectable reason for a us presence in the region - i would love to hear it.

anyone who thinks barack obama is not an ally of the israeli government hasn’t been paying attention. if obama’s regime was really opposed to ‘israel’ you would hear about it. the IDF would collapse.

thanks for the ‘question’, anonymous.

"Anarchism, to me, means not only the denial of authority, not only a new economy, but a revision of the principles of morality. It means the development of the individual as well as the assertion of the individual. It means self-responsibility, and not leader worship."
